A Brief History of the Fayette County Health District

The Earliest records of the Health District date to 1920.  In 1936 the City of Washington Health Department combined with the Fayette County General Health District to form the Fayette County Combined General Health District of the City of Washington and Fayette County.  That remains the "official" name of the health district today.  Over the years the offices became known as the Fayette County Health Department.  Ohio Law, however, allows only municipalities  to have health departments, which are a subdivision of the city government.  County Health offices are "Health Districts" which are much more autonomous.
